For one week in May of 2012, the Ionia Macrobiotic Community in Kasilof, Alaska invited renowned Macrobiotic Pioneer, Teacher, Author and Health Consultant, Bill Tara and his wife, Marlene Watson-Tara, to share their wisdom over a period of four days.  On the morning of his last day of talks Bill spent two hours recounting his experiences with macrobiotics from the mid 1960s through to today.

His adventures began with the exciting and tumultuous “hippie” days doing the lighting for rock concerts, with business partner and friend, Paul Hawken,  in San Francisco to helping Michio and Aveline Kushi in early days of the macrobiotic movement in Boston building Erewhon in Boston and LA, and spreading macrobiotics around the US and in Europe.  Bill’s personal story is a veritable first hand account of how the natural and organic foods movement began and how macrobiotics changed much of the world in attitudes toward health and food, and why it continues to be misunderstood.

Bill and Marlene currently reside in Scotland and teach at the Penninghame House.  The Ionia Macrobiotic Community was founded in 1985 by a group of four families seeking to explore what it means to “live” macrobiotically. This was an impromptu recording done on an iPhone.  The recording is unedited and not enhanced.  You can listen to an interview with Barry and Cathy Creighton, co-founders of the Ionia Community right here on Macrobiotic Adventures.
